Hiding & Stealth
Hiding is one of the core skills of the Roguish Skill Tree. Stealth, being a part of the hiding skill, is the ability to move while remaining hidden.
To begin attempting to hide is as easy as using the [Hiding command (Note: the command is specifically [hiding, not [hide, nor any other variation).
There is no pre-requisite skill level or perk to begin attempting to hide but if you do not have much skill at it, you will find your attempts unsuccessful, but each unsuccessful attempt has a chance to raise your skill level at it. There is a cooldown of 8 seconds (Check for Accuracy) between each attempt to hide. This cooldown increases to 16 seconds (Check for Accuracy) if you are revealed by another creature/player through the [reveal command.
The only pre-requisite that is required to hide is that no creature (Player or NPC) has a line of sight (LOS) to you. If someone/something can see you, you will get the following error:
To be “outside” a creature's LoS, you must not be within 8 tiles of it.
Lightsources (Torches/Lanterns/Candles/Etc) will also prevent you from hiding. Without any perks, you cannot be within 6 tiles of a lightsource or you will receive the following error:
Sometimes you simply fail in your attempt to hide, receiving the following error:
Once you succeed at your hiding attempt, you will receive the following message confirming you're hidden:
Once hidden, you will remain hidden. Though there are some actions/effects that can undo the hiding, making you visible again, needing to attempt to rehide. Some actions that will unhide you include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Drinking a potion
- Becoming poisoned from being too hungry/thirsty
- Speak/Whisper/Yell
These actions can be done without breaking stealth:
- Eating food/drinking water/beverages
- Equipping Weapons/Changing clothing and armor
- Changing between Peace/War stance
- Interacting with items in your inventory
- Emote
- Picking items up from the ground
